Description

Beginning at the cecum in the right lower quadrant, the animation tracks through the ascending colon to the hepatic flexure, across the transverse colon to the splenic flexure, then down the descending colon into the sigmoid colon and rectum. Each segment is presented in section so the colonic lumen remains central while the mucosal rugae and semilunar folds appear as circumferential ridges that subdivide the wall into haustra. Mesenteric relationships are implied by position: the ascending and descending colon sit more posteriorly against the abdominal wall, while the transverse and sigmoid loops course more anteriorly and inferiorly with greater mobility. Orientation stays anatomical, right-to-left and superior-to-inferior, as the cut plane advances along the bowel. Seeing the haustral pattern change by segment matters when you teach or interpret large-bowel examinations, because the normal fold architecture can be mistaken for pathology if the viewer does not understand how semilunar folds create the segmented contour. The sectional progression clarifies why the hepatic and splenic flexures are common points of angulation during colonoscopy and why luminal narrowing at these turns can complicate scope passage or contrast flow. Motion helps. A static plate cannot convey how a continuous lumen becomes intermittently compartmentalized by folds and then opens again as the cut passes from one haustral chamber to the next.
