Description
Radiographic-style rendering brings the female esophagus into focus as it descends from the hypopharynx posterior to the larynx and trachea, then courses through the superior mediastinum toward the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm. The animation tracks the lumen from the upper esophageal sphincter (cricopharyngeus at C5 to C6) inferiorly to the gastroesophageal junction, where the lower esophageal sphincter region abuts the gastric cardia. As the sequence progresses, a swallowed bolus is conveyed by coordinated peristaltic contractions while the trachea remains anterior and slightly right of midline in the upper thorax. Airway and foodway remain tightly apposed. That spatial relationship matters in daily clinical work because dysphagia, aspiration events, and iatrogenic injury often hinge on knowing what lies immediately anterior to the esophageal wall at each vertebral level.
