Description
Beginning with a gross, anterior-superior view of the female liver beneath the right hemidiaphragm, the animation tracks the organ’s surface contour as the normally smooth Glisson capsule becomes bosselated by regenerating nodules separated by pale fibrous septa. As time advances, the right lobe typically appears shrunken relative to the left and caudate lobes, and the fissure for the ligamentum teres and the porta hepatis become more conspicuous as the parenchyma retracts. Cutaway phases move from the capsular surface into the lobules, showing bridging fibrosis linking portal tracts to central veins, with progressive distortion of hepatic sinusoids and the portal triad architecture (hepatic artery, portal vein, bile duct) within expanding scar. Cirrhosis is not just scarring, it is a mechanical re-plumbing of hepatic blood flow. By animating the stepwise conversion from diffuse fibrosis to nodular cirrhosis, the sequence makes portal hypertension intuitive: increasing resistance within the sinusoidal network drives dilation of portal venous tributaries and encourages portosystemic collateral formation, the substrate for esophageal variceal hemorrhage and caput medusae. The same structural distortion explains jaundice and cholestasis when bile canaliculi and interlobular ducts are compressed, and it clarifies why end-stage disease can progress to ascites, hepatorenal syndrome, and hepatic encephalopathy even when the liver’s external size seems only modestly changed.
