Description

Anteriorly, the sternum and costal cartilages frame the lungs, while posteriorly the vertebral column and ribs define the paravertebral gutters that the lower lobes occupy in quiet respiration. Medially, the mediastinal surfaces track the cardiac silhouette and great vessels, and the sequence highlights the hila where the main bronchi, pulmonary arteries, and pulmonary veins enter and leave the lung.
