The duodenum forms its characteristic C-loop in the right upper abdomen, then the jejunal loops cluster more centrally and to the left with tighter plicae circulares, while the ileal loops drift inferiorly and into the right lower quadrant toward the ileocecal valve. As the sequence progresses, the opacified column advances and redistributes, so you can track changing caliber, overlap, and the shifting interloop spaces created by peristaltic motion. For radiology teaching, this is the clearest way to connect anatomy to a small-bowel follow-through pattern: normal fold density differences between jejunum and ileum, expected transit, and the way loops stack within the confines of the peritoneal cavity. Dynamic passage of contrast helps distinguish fixed narrowing from transient spasm, and it makes classic pathology easier to explain, including Crohn disease in the terminal ileum, adhesional small-bowel obstruction with proximal dilation and delayed progression, and malrotation suggested by abnormal positioning of the duodenojejunal flexure.
