Description
Centered in the male pelvis, the urinary bladder appears as a hollow muscular sac with its apex directed anteriorly toward the pubic symphysis and its base (fundus) facing posteriorly toward the rectum, separated in part by the seminal vesicles and ampullae of the ductus deferens. As the animation progresses through rotation and cutaway views, the thick detrusor muscle is revealed beneath the mucosa, while the bladder neck tapers inferiorly to the proximal urethra just superior to the prostate. Posterolaterally, the ureters course obliquely through the bladder wall and open at the ureteric orifices, which bracket the smooth trigone and converge toward the internal urethral orifice. Landmarks stay clear. Attention to the trigone matters because it is the fixed, non-rugated region you target and re-identify during cystoscopy: the interureteric ridge, the ureteric orifices, and the bladder neck define orientation when the rest of the mucosa is thrown into folds by changes in filling. Seeing the wall thicken and relax over time clarifies how detrusor contraction couples with bladder-neck opening during micturition, and why outlet obstruction from benign prostatic hyperplasia can drive trabeculation, diverticula formation, and high residual volumes. The oblique intramural ureter segment shown in sequence also explains the anti-reflux mechanism that fails in vesicoureteral reflux.
