Description

Seen in rhythmic motion, the male heart contracts and relaxes through a full cardiac cycle, with the right and left ventricles forming the inferior and anterior bulk and the atria positioned superiorly at the base. During systole the ventricular myocardium thickens and shortens, drawing the atrioventricular junction toward the apex while the left ventricle twists slightly relative to the right, then recoils during diastole as the chambers refill. The aortic root rises superiorly and posteriorly from the left ventricle, the pulmonary trunk courses anteriorly and leftward from the right ventricle, and the coronary arteries track along the atrioventricular and interventricular grooves. A clean cadence. Clinically, appreciating this sequence matters because many bedside findings map directly onto these phase changes: the palpable pulse reflects left ventricular ejection into the aorta, S1 aligns with mitral and tricuspid closure at the onset of systole, and S2 corresponds to aortic and pulmonary valve closure as diastole begins.
