Description
Seen from the posterior thorax, the animation centers on the left atrium as the four pulmonary veins (right and left, superior and inferior) course medially from the hila and enter the atrial wall as paired venous ostia. The pulmonary venous confluence sits superior to the coronary sinus in the atrioventricular groove, while the right atrium remains more rightward and anterior, receiving the superior and inferior venae cavae. As the camera advances and subtly rotates, myocardial fiber texture and the smooth posterior left atrial surface come into view, clarifying how the venous junctions sit posterior to the great arterial trunks. Orientation is unmistakable. Posterior left atrial and pulmonary vein anatomy matters because it is the substrate for atrial fibrillation triggers and the target for pulmonary vein isolation, where catheter position depends on appreciating the rim of atrial myocardium around each ostium rather than treating the veins as simple tubes.
