Description
Centered on the cardiac base, the animation tracks the ascending aorta as it rises superiorly from the left ventricle before curving posteriorly and leftward into the aortic arch, with the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery branching in sequence from its superior aspect. Anterior and slightly left of the aorta, the pulmonary trunk emerges from the right ventricle and bifurcates into the right and left pulmonary arteries as the viewpoint advances cranially across the superior mediastinum. Posterior to these arterial trunks, the superior vena cava descends on the right toward the right atrium, while the pulmonary veins course medially from each lung to enter the left atrium. Clear vessel wall texture and subtle caliber changes guide the eye along each connection. Orientation at the heart’s base is where learners commonly lose spatial confidence, and it is also where cardiothoracic teams work when placing cannulas, cross-clamps, and pulmonary artery catheters. A moving sequence clarifies how the aortic arch sits posterior to the pulmonary trunk and how the right pulmonary artery runs horizontally and posterior to the ascending aorta and superior vena cava, relationships that matter when interpreting CT angiography for aortic dissection, arch aneurysm, or mediastinal mass effect.
