Description
Beginning at the left ventricle, the ascending aorta rises superiorly and arches posteriorly and to the left before continuing as the descending thoracic and abdominal aorta, sending segmental branches into a connected male arterial tree. Coronary arteries course in the atrioventricular and interventricular grooves on the surface of the myocardium, wrapping toward the apex while the ventricles thicken and relax through the cardiac cycle. Anteriorly, the pulmonary trunk exits the right ventricle and bifurcates into right and left pulmonary arteries as the heartbeat drives alternating systolic outflow and diastolic recoil. Superior and inferior vena cava return blood to the right atrium, framing the arterial outflow with the major venous inflow. Pulsatile motion matters here. Watching the myocardium contract while the aortic root expands helps clarify why the aortic valve and sinuses of Valsalva are common sites for pathology, from aortic regurgitation to type A dissection, and why coronary perfusion peaks in diastole even as the heart itself is in motion.
