Description

Centered in the mediastinum, the male heart fills the pericardial space with the base directed superiorly and posteriorly and the apex pointing anteriorly, inferiorly, and to the left. Rhythmic systole and diastole drive visible thickening and recoil of the ventricular myocardium, with the left ventricle forming most of the left border and the apex, while the right ventricle occupies the anterior (sternocostal) surface. Superiorly, the ascending aorta rises from the left ventricle and the pulmonary trunk emerges anterior to it from the right ventricle, as the superior and inferior venae cavae enter the right atrium on the heart’s right side; the coronary arteries and accompanying cardiac veins course along the atrioventricular (coronary) sulcus and interventricular grooves as the chambers cycle.
