Running along the medial arm, superficial lymphatic vessels accompany the basilic vein and converge toward the cubital (supratrochlear) nodes and the humeral (lateral) group of axillary lymph nodes. Laterally, collectors tracking with the cephalic vein course in the deltopectoral groove and then pass superiorly toward the apical axillary nodes near the first rib and clavicle. Deeper in the arm, lymphatics follow the brachial artery and paired brachial veins, traveling proximal to distal with arterial branching and then reversing direction as the sequence returns proximally toward the axilla. Flow is directional. Clinical work in the upper limb often comes down to these pathways: cellulitis of the hand can declare itself as lymphangitic streaking up the forearm toward the medial arm, while melanoma or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin may drain first to cubital or deltopectoral nodes before reaching the axilla. The animated progression clarifies why axillary node assessment can miss alternate drainage routes and why sentinel node mapping may identify interval nodes outside the central axillary basin. Watching lymph move from distal arm toward the axillary vein and subclavian vein region also helps explain post operative lymphedema patterns after axillary lymph node dissection or radiation, where disruption of humeral and apical node drainage increases limb volume and infection risk.
