Description
Progressive arthrosis unfolds across the male elbow joint, centered on the humeroulnar articulation between the distal humeral trochlea and the ulnar trochlear notch, including the coronoid process anteriorly and the olecranon posteriorly. As the sequence advances, articular cartilage thins and fissures, the subchondral bone becomes irregular, and marginal osteophytes accumulate along the coronoid and olecranon lips where they encroach on the anterior and posterior fossae. Lateral to the ulna, the radiocapitellar joint (radial head against capitulum) tracks the same degenerative wear pattern, with capsular thickening and possible loose bodies drifting within the synovial space as motion continues. Range of motion narrows. Elbow osteoarthritis is less common than hip or knee degeneration, so when it appears it often reflects post-traumatic arthritis after radial head fracture or distal humerus injury, or repetitive overload patterns such as valgus extension overload in throwing athletes. Osteophytes at the coronoid and olecranon tips explain the classic mechanical block to terminal flexion and extension, while irregular joint surfaces and exposed subchondral bone correlate with crepitus and activity-related pain. Animation clarifies this stepwise cascade better than a static plate because you can watch how cartilage loss, osteophyte growth, and joint incongruity accumulate over time and progressively restrict humeroulnar glide and ulnohumeral stability. Ideal for orthopaedic surgery teaching on elbow arthritis, sports medicine modules on degenerative change from overuse, and medical publishing that needs a clear visual of cartilage wear, osteophyte formation, and joint space narrowing in a human male elbow. It also supports patient-facing education for counseling on symptoms, conservative care, and indications for arthroscopy or osteophyte debridement.
