Oriented in an anterior (ventral) view, both lungs are presented with the anterior bronchopulmonary segments color-accented against the remaining parenchyma. Segmentum anterius of the upper lobes lies anterior to the segmenta apicale and posterius and faces the sternocostal surface, with its segmental bronchus and accompanying pulmonary arterial branch tracking centrally before arborizing distally. Medially, the contours approach the mediastinal pleura, while laterally the highlighted territory sweeps toward the costal margins; the right lung’s anterior segment sits adjacent to the horizontal fissure region, and the left side abuts the lingular segments. Segmental anatomy matters most when you need a map that matches what surgeons, bronchoscopists, and radiologists mean by a “segment.” An anterior emphasis supports planning for segmentectomy of the upper lobe (for example, resection of the right S3) and helps clarify how endobronchial access follows the segmental bronchus rather than lobar boundaries.
