Description
Presented as a lateral section through the adult male heart, the left ventricle dominates the field with its markedly thick myocardium and a trabeculae carneae network projecting from the endocardial surface. Superior to the ventricular cavity, the left ventricular outflow tract leads toward the aortic root, where the aortic valve cusps sit at the junction between ventricle and ascending aorta. Externally, the epicardial surface carries coronary vessels coursing within subepicardial fat, while the pericardial contour frames the organ. Scale and wall thickness are unmistakable. This cut gives a clean teaching comparison between the smooth, high pressure outflow tract and the more heavily trabeculated inflow portion of the left ventricle, a distinction that matters when describing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy with dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve (often discussed in relation to the aortic valve level).
