Description
Shown in lateral cross section, the male heart is opened to expose the right and left atria superiorly and the right and left ventricles inferiorly, with the interventricular septum separating the ventricular cavities. Broad atrial inflow orifices are evident, with the right atrium positioned more anteriorly and the left atrium more posteriorly, consistent with normal cardiac orientation in situ. The left ventricular myocardium appears thicker than the right, and the atrioventricular valve complexes sit between atria and ventricles, their leaflets tethered by chordae tendineae to papillary muscles. Superiorly, the outflow tracts lead toward the pulmonary trunk anteriorly and the ascending aorta posteriorly. A lateral section like this is a workhorse for teaching flow direction and valve mechanics because it ties chamber geometry to pressure load, especially the contrast between the thick-walled left ventricle and the thinner right ventricle.
