Description
Viewed from the posterior aspect of an adult male pelvis and proximal thigh, the adductor longus is identified as a medial thigh muscle arising from the body of the pubis and coursing inferolaterally toward the middle third of the linea aspera on the posterior femoral shaft. Its elongated fascicles taper into a distal tendon that lies medial to the femur, with the muscle belly occupying the interval between the anterior-medial adductor compartment and the more posterior hamstring plane. Posterior bony landmarks of the pelvic ring and the proximal femur orient the origin and insertion, while adjacent posterior thigh musculature, including the biceps femoris, frames the lateral boundary of the field. Clear medial-to-lateral layering is emphasized. A posterior perspective is useful when you need to reconcile adductor anatomy with posterior thigh dissection planes and proximal hamstring pathology. Clinically, adductor longus tendinopathy and acute proximal adductor strains present as groin pain but can confuse the exam when symptoms refer posteriorly, and understanding the pubic origin and femoral insertion helps differentiate adductor injury from proximal hamstring strain at the ischial tuberosity.
