Description
Overlying the male preauricular region, the auricle (pinna) is rendered in clear relief, with the anterior auricular muscle positioned immediately anterior to the root of the helix and superficial to the temporal fascia. From its origin along the temporal fascia, the muscle fibers course posteriorly toward the anterior margin of the auricular cartilage, sitting lateral to the temporalis and superior to the parotid region. Skin has been removed to expose the thin superficial tissue plane, keeping the relationship between the auricle and adjacent muscles readable at a glance. Small anatomy matters here. Attention to the anterior auricular muscle is less about strength and more about landmarks and planes, because it lies in the same superficial field used when raising skin flaps for preauricular and temporal approaches. This view supports teaching around the superficial musculoaponeurotic system and temporoparietal fascia, where dissection too deep can drift into the parotid fascia anteriorly or compromise the auriculotemporal nerve and superficial temporal vessels coursing in the vicinity. For otoplasty, rhytidectomy, or repair of preauricular lacerations, knowing what is truly subcutaneous versus fascial reduces avoidable distortion of the auricle and tethering scars. Plastic surgery and ENT teaching files benefit from a clean depiction of the preauricular soft tissues, while anatomy courses often use it to clarify the small extrinsic auricular muscles that are easy to miss on prosection.
