Description
Positioned on the lateral aspect of the head, the anterior auricular muscle (musculus auricularis anterior) appears as a thin slip of the epicranial musculature coursing from the temporal fascia toward the anterior margin of the auricle (pinna). Its fibers lie superficial to the temporalis region and insert near the root of the helix, just anterior to the external acoustic meatus. Small and easily overlooked. Adjacent landmarks expected in this perspective include the cartilaginous auricle, the tragus and helical crus region, and the superficial soft tissues overlying the temporal bone. Orientation of the auricular muscles matters because they sit in the same surgical neighborhood as common preauricular incisions and endoscopic approaches to the temporomandibular joint, where the superficial musculoaponeurotic system and branches of the facial nerve must be respected. The anterior auricular is an extrinsic ear muscle, so its relationship to the temporal fascia and periauricular tissue planes helps clarify why most patients have limited voluntary pinna motion yet still show subtle ear displacement with frontalis and temporoparietalis activity. For anatomy teaching, it also reinforces the continuity between the galea aponeurotica, temporal fascia, and periauricular connective tissues.
