Description
Seen in a calvarial section of an adult male skull, the dura mater lines the inner table of the cranial vault while the arachnoid mater forms a thin, translucent layer immediately deep to it, bridging over sulci rather than dipping into them. Deep to the arachnoid, the pia mater follows the cortical contours and invests the superficial cerebral vasculature, with the subarachnoid space separating pia and arachnoid as the CSF-containing compartment. Along the cranial floor, the relationship of these meningeal layers to the anterior, middle, and posterior cranial fossae is implied by the exposed endocranial surface, including the region of the sella turcica and adjacent foramina transmitting cranial nerves and vessels. Arachnoid anatomy matters because it defines the subarachnoid space and its cisterns, the setting for subarachnoid hemorrhage after rupture of a saccular aneurysm in the circle of Willis. Blood tracks through this space, mixes with CSF, and explains both the classic basal cisternal pattern on CT and the meningeal irritation that drives nuchal rigidity. Arachnoid granulations (villi) also return CSF to the dural venous sinuses, so disruption of this interface helps frame communicating hydrocephalus after hemorrhage or meningitis. Small layer, big consequences. Use this illustration in neuroanatomy and head and neck courses to teach the meninges as layered membranes rather than a single wrapping, and in radiology or neurosurgery texts to orient readers to where extra-axial collections sit: epidural hematoma between skull and dura, subdural hematoma between dura and arachnoid, and subarachnoid blood deep to the arachnoid.
