Description
Anterior vertebral bodies and intervertebral disc spaces define the cervical column from C1 through C7, with pedicles and laminae curving posteriorly to form the vertebral canal and the bifid spinous processes projecting posteriorly in the midline. Laterally, the transverse processes extend toward the intertransverse spaces, and the transverse foramina align in a vertical series where the vertebral artery typically ascends from C6 to C1. One cervical vertebra is color-highlighted in blue, drawing attention to its superior and inferior articular processes and the zygapophyseal (facet) joints that guide motion segment by segment. Spatially, the uncovertebral margins along the posterolateral vertebral bodies sit medial to the transverse foramina and just anterior to the facet columns. Facet orientation in the cervical spine favors flexion, extension, and axial rotation, but it also concentrates load at the uncovertebral joints and zygapophyseal joints during degenerative change. A blue-highlighted level works well for teaching cervical spondylosis: uncovertebral osteophytes often narrow the intervertebral foramen and irritate exiting nerve roots, while facet arthropathy can drive neck pain and limit rotation.
