Description
Lateral anatomy of the male vertebral column is presented with emphasis on the cervical spine from the occipital region through the cervicothoracic junction. The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) sit immediately inferior to the skull base, with C3 through C7 stacked caudally in a gentle cervical lordosis and transitioning toward the first thoracic vertebra. Vertebral bodies align anteriorly, while the spinous processes and laminae form a posterior contour; intervertebral discs separate adjacent bodies from C2–C3 to C7–T1, and one motion segment is singled out in blue, including its disc, to mark a focal level. Side-on visualization matters in the neck because small changes in sagittal alignment and disc height correlate with common clinical problems, from degenerative cervical spondylosis to post-traumatic kyphotic angulation after whiplash. The highlighted vertebra-disc unit reads naturally as a target level for teaching disc herniation patterns, osteophyte formation at uncovertebral joints, or preoperative planning for an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, where surgeons work along the anterior vertebral bodies and disc spaces.
