Description
Positioned in lateral profile, the sixth cervical vertebra (C6) is rendered with the vertebral body anterior and the spinous process projecting posteriorly, framing the vertebral foramen between them. Superior and inferior vertebral notches define the intervertebral foramen, while the transverse process extends laterally and carries the foramen transversarium for the vertebral vessels. Uncinate processes rise along the superolateral margins of the vertebral body, and the superior and inferior articular processes align obliquely for coupled flexion extension and rotation in the lower cervical spine. This is a lower neck transition segment. C6 matters because it is the level of the carotid tubercle (anterior tubercle of the transverse process), a palpable landmark used for carotid artery compression and for orientation during anterior approaches to the cervical spine. The relationship between the uncinate processes, uncovertebral joints, and the intervertebral foramen is also where degenerative change can narrow the foramen and irritate the C6 nerve root, producing pain and paresthesia along the lateral forearm and thumb and weakness of wrist extension. Correlating the lateral bony contours with fluoroscopic or lateral radiographic anatomy helps when planning foraminal decompression or confirming level during surgery. Ideal for gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching blocks covering the cervical spine, and for spine texts discussing spondylosis, radiculopathy, and anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) level targeting.
