Description
From a superior (cranial) perspective, the third cervical vertebra (C3) presents a low, broad vertebral body anteriorly with its superior endplate flanked by raised uncinate processes along the superolateral margins. Posterior to the body, the triangular vertebral foramen opens centrally, bounded by the pedicles and laminae, while the superior articular facets sit posterolaterally, oriented to receive C2 and guide coupled rotation and lateral flexion in the mid cervical spine. Lateral to the pedicles, the transverse processes project on each side with transverse foramina positioned for the vertebral vessels, and the spinous process lies posterior in the midline. A key junction. Because this is a cranial view, the uncovertebral region is easy to read, which matters when teaching or planning around cervical spondylosis where osteophytes can arise from the uncinate processes and narrow the intervertebral foramen, contributing to C3 radiculopathy. The superior articular facets also set the tone for zygapophyseal (facet) joint mechanics, a common pain generator and a target for medial branch blocks or radiofrequency ablation when conservative care fails. Educators commonly use this orientation in gross anatomy and spine biomechanics courses to contrast the typical cervical vertebra (C3 to C6) with the atlas and axis, and to reinforce surface landmarks that correlate with axial CT slices through the mid cervical spine. It also fits well in surgical anatomy references discussing anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), where uncinate resection and foraminal decompression are planned with these relationships in mind.
