Description
From a superior perspective, the third thoracic vertebra (T3) is presented with the vertebral body anteriorly and the vertebral arch posteriorly, framing the vertebral foramen at the midline. Posterolaterally, the paired pedicles and laminae converge toward the spinous process, while the transverse processes project laterally from the junction of pedicle and lamina. Costal facets are expected at this level, with superior demifacets on the posterolateral margins of the vertebral body for the head of rib 3 and transverse costal facets on the transverse processes for the tubercle of rib 3. This angle is the one you want when teaching how thoracic vertebrae differ from cervical and lumbar segments, because the heart shaped vertebral body and rib articulations read clearly from above and explain why thoracic motion is constrained by the rib cage. T3 sits near the superior thoracic aperture, so its costovertebral and costotransverse joints become practical landmarks during posterior approaches to the upper thoracic spine and when interpreting CT for fractures at the cervicothoracic junction. The superior view also helps correlate the relative size and shape of the vertebral foramen with the thoracic spinal cord and the canal compromise seen in burst fractures or metastatic collapse.
