Description
Dominating the anterior perspective is the T4 vertebral body, a broad, convex cylinder positioned anterior to the vertebral foramen and vertebral arch. Lateral to the body, the pedicles lead into the transverse processes, where the transverse costal facets sit near the process bases for articulation with the tubercles of the fourth ribs. Posterior elements remain visible by projection, with the laminae converging toward an inferiorly angled spinous process typical of mid-thoracic vertebrae. Costal demifacets on the superolateral and inferolateral margins of the body are suggested by the highlighted articular surfaces. T4 sits at the approximate level of the sternal angle (Angle of Louis), a surface landmark clinicians use to count ribs and locate the T4 to T5 intervertebral disc in thoracic imaging and procedures. Understanding the anterior morphology and rib articulation points helps when interpreting CT or radiographs for thoracic vertebral compression fractures, metastatic deposits, or rib head and costovertebral joint injuries that refer pain to the posterior thorax. Small details matter. The thoracic spinous process angulation and costal facet orientation also frame posterior surgical planning, where level identification errors remain a real hazard in the mid-thoracic spine. Use this plate in gross anatomy and osteology teaching to contrast thoracic vertebrae with cervical and lumbar types, and to reinforce how rib-bearing facets define the thoracic region of the vertebral column.
