Description
Seen in lateral profile, the C5 cervical vertebra presents an anterior vertebral body with its superior and inferior endplates, while the pedicles project posteriorly as short, stout struts that bridge to the laminae and enclose the vertebral foramen. Superior and inferior articular processes rise and descend at the junction of pedicle and lamina, their facet surfaces oriented to form the zygapophysial (facet) joints with C4 and C6. Lateral to the vertebral arch, the transverse process is shown in side view with the transverse foramen positioned anterolateral to the articular pillar region. The spinous process extends posteriorly. Compact, blocklike. For cervical biomechanics, C5 sits at the center of common injury patterns, and a lateral view clarifies why: the pedicle size and the relationship of the superior articular facet to the lamina define the bony corridor used in posterior lateral mass and pedicle-based fixation.
