Description
Beneath the skin of the male foot, the plantar intrinsic muscles are layered around the metatarsals and phalanges, with the calcaneus forming the posterior anchor at the heel. Medially, abductor hallucis and flexor hallucis brevis track toward the hallux, while flexor digitorum brevis sits more centrally and sends slips distally toward the lateral four toes. Deeper, the quadratus plantae and lumbricals relate closely to the flexor digitorum longus tendons, and the dorsal and plantar interossei occupy the intermetatarsal spaces, hugging the shafts and bases of the metatarsals. Tendons are rendered as pale, fibrous bands, including the Achilles tendon inserting onto the posterior calcaneal tuberosity. Clear separation of tissue types. Layer-by-layer plantar anatomy matters because small shifts in tendon course and muscle bulk change forefoot mechanics and pain patterns.
