Description
Seen from a posterior perspective, the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve (continuation of the musculocutaneous nerve) emerges at the lateral aspect of the cubital fossa, then tracks distally along the radial side of the forearm toward the wrist. Superficially, its terminal filaments spread over the posterolateral antebrachium, lying lateral to the flexor–extensor muscle mass and in close relationship to the cephalic vein as the nerve approaches the distal forearm. The radius and ulna provide the longitudinal skeletal landmarks, with the distal radioulnar region and carpal bones giving a clear endpoint for the cutaneous territory. For teaching and procedural planning, this view matters because the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve is a frequent source of iatrogenic sensory symptoms, often injured during venipuncture or cannulation of the cephalic vein, during lateral forearm incisions, or when working around the elbow for distal biceps tendon repair. Posterior orientation helps distinguish its sensory field from the superficial radial nerve more dorsally and distally and from the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve on the ulnar side. Use this asset in upper limb anatomy labs, regional anesthesia and peripheral nerve block teaching, and surgical education materials that address lateral elbow approaches, cephalic vein access, and postprocedure dysesthesia patterns.
