Description
Seen from a medial profile, the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve (medial cutaneous nerve of forearm) descends in the arm alongside the brachial artery, then courses toward the cubital fossa before distributing over the medial forearm. Proximally, the nerve lies medial to the biceps brachii and anterior to the medial head of triceps, with the humerus deep and posterior and the forearm flexor mass beginning distal to the elbow. More distally, the ulnar nerve tracks posterior to the medial epicondyle while the median nerve remains anterior in the arm, creating a clean comparison of medial neurovascular relationships. Landmarks are clear. A medial angle like this matters because the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve is frequently encountered, and injured, during venipuncture at the median cubital region and during surgical exposure of the brachial artery for trauma control or vascular access. Its close association with the brachial artery and adjacent superficial veins explains why patients can report burning dysesthesia along the ulnar-sided forearm after an otherwise routine needle stick. The same anatomy guides surgeons during medial arm approaches and during creation or revision of arteriovenous access, where careful subcutaneous dissection helps avoid painful sensory neuroma.
