Description
Arising from the medial cord of the brachial plexus (C8 to T1), the medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve is traced in anterior view as it descends on the medial side of the arm, closely related to the axillary artery proximally and the brachial artery and basilic vein more distally. Superficial landmarks include the pectoralis major anteriorly and the deltoid laterally at the shoulder, with the humerus providing the deep bony framework. Near the distal arm and cubital fossa region, the nerve approaches the deep fascia and courses toward the medial epicondylar area before continuing into the forearm to supply skin over the anteromedial antebrachium. Small but easy to injure. Clinically, this nerve matters because it runs in the same corridor used for venipuncture and venous cannulation of the basilic vein, and neuropathic pain or dysesthesia along the ulnar-side forearm can follow iatrogenic injury. Its position also intersects common surgical exposures and regional anesthesia pathways, including medial arm incisions and brachial plexus block approaches where distinguishing it from adjacent branches such as the medial brachial cutaneous nerve helps avoid postoperative sensory complaints.
