Description
Arising from the radial nerve in the posterior compartment of the arm, the posterior antebrachial cutaneous nerve is traced from its high-arm separation point and then followed distally toward the elbow and dorsal-lateral forearm, even though the overall figure is oriented from an anterior viewing position. The nerve courses superficially as it approaches the lateral epicondylar region, maintaining a relationship lateral to the humeral shaft and then along the radius-side of the antebrachium. Surrounding skeletal landmarks anchor the pathway, including the clavicle and scapula proximally, the humerus through the brachium, and the radius, ulna, metacarpals, and phalanges distally. Clinically, this branch matters because it carries cutaneous sensation from the posterior forearm and can be injured where the radial nerve is vulnerable, including the spiral groove region and near the lateral elbow during trauma or operative exposure.
