Description
Running along the superolateral margin of the external nose, the lateral nasal cartilage (cartilago nasi lateralis) is shown continuous medially with the septal cartilage and blending inferiorly with the alar cartilages near the nasal apex. Superiorly it approaches the nasal bones at the osseocartilaginous junction, while its posterior border relates to the piriform aperture of the maxilla. Surrounding craniofacial landmarks in profile include the frontal, parietal, and occipital bones with coronal, sagittal, and lambdoid sutures, plus the maxillary dentition, orbital contents (extraocular muscles), and proximal cervical vertebrae. Orientation is lateral. For rhinologic teaching, the lateral nasal cartilage matters because it forms a major component of the midvault, the region that stabilizes the upper lateral wall and helps maintain the internal nasal valve angle between the upper lateral cartilage and the dorsal septum. Collapse or overresection in this zone, classically after reductive rhinoplasty, can produce symptomatic nasal obstruction that worsens with inspiration and may require spreader grafts or flaring sutures to restore support. Fracture patterns from nasal trauma also tend to propagate toward the osseocartilaginous junction, so correlating the cartilage with adjacent nasal bone and piriform rim is clinically practical. Otolaryngology and plastic surgery programs can slot this artwork into modules on nasal framework, septoplasty, and functional rhinoplasty, and it also fits well in head and neck anatomy courses covering the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
