Description
Posterior surface anatomy of an obese adult male is rendered with a semi transparent overlay that localizes the right and left lungs in the upper thorax and the liver in the right upper quadrant beneath the diaphragm. The hepatic parenchyma occupies the right hypochondrium, extending medially toward the epigastrium, with its visceral (inferior) surface oriented anteroinferiorly even though the body is viewed from behind. Inferior to the liver, segments of the digestive tract, including loops of intestine, lie in the central and lower abdomen. Spatial relationships read cleanly from this back view: liver inferior to the right lung base, lateral to the midline, and superior to the intestinal mass. A posterior perspective helps teach organ projection to the body wall, which matters when obesity blunts palpation landmarks and shifts clinical reliance toward imaging and surface mapping. The right hepatic dome sits under the costal margin and abuts the diaphragm and pleura, explaining why subphrenic irritation can refer pain to the shoulder and why right lower lobe processes can coexist with hepatic or subdiaphragmatic pathology. This is also the orientation clinicians use when planning posterior approaches to the upper abdomen on cross sectional imaging, where a steatotic or enlarged liver in obesity changes expected contours and crowded adjacent anatomy.
