Description
Running from the scalp and face into the thoracic inlet, superficial lymphatic vessels converge on the pericervical collar of nodes, including the occipital, mastoid (retroauricular), parotid (preauricular), submandibular, and submental groups. Along the lateral neck, the superficial cervical nodes track the external jugular vein over the sternocleidomastoid, while the deep cervical chain lies medial and deep to sternocleidomastoid within the carotid sheath region, extending from the angle of the mandible to the supraclavicular fossa. Inferiorly, efferents funnel toward the jugular lymphatic trunks and the venous angles, with transverse connections suggested across the lower neck and upper chest. Clinically, this head and neck distribution matters because nodal involvement often mirrors mucosal drainage pathways: oral cavity and anterior tongue commonly present first in submental or submandibular nodes, while nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal malignancies frequently spread to the upper deep cervical (jugulodigastric) nodes. Palpable enlargement along the anterior border of sternocleidomastoid is a routine examination finding, and this overlay helps correlate that surface anatomy with the deeper cervical chain targeted in ultrasound assessment and neck dissection levels.
