Description
Running distally along the lower leg into the ankle and foot, the superficial and deep lymphatic collecting vessels are visualized in an x-ray style over a translucent skeleton of the tarsus, metatarsals, and phalanges. Medially, channels follow the course expected alongside the great saphenous vein anterior to the medial malleolus, then continue proximally toward the superficial inguinal nodes. Laterally and posteriorly, additional collectors track behind the lateral malleolus with the small saphenous pathway toward the popliteal nodes, while deeper vessels accompany the anterior tibial, posterior tibial, and fibular (peroneal) vascular bundles through the ankle region. A clean map of drainage. Understanding foot lymphatics matters in the clinical problem set where edema, infection, and malignancy spread do not respect dermatomes or arterial territories. This view supports teaching of lymphangitis tracking from toe web spaces, diabetic foot ulcer infection ascending from the forefoot toward the ankle, and postoperative or post-traumatic swelling when collectors are disrupted around the malleoli or dorsum of the foot. It also aligns with sentinel node concepts for cutaneous lesions of the foot, where medial versus lateral drainage influences whether inguinal or popliteal basins warrant attention.
