Description
Posteriorly, the popliteal fossa is framed by the distal femur superiorly and the proximal tibia and fibula inferiorly, with the tibiofibular joint line and posterior tibial plateau forming the bony backdrop. Superimposed x-ray style lymphatic vessels track along the posterior knee, converging on small popliteal lymph nodes embedded in the fat adjacent to the popliteal neurovascular bundle. More proximally, collecting trunks course toward the deep inguinal region, while distal channels accompany the deep vessels from the calf toward the knee. Orientation is bilateral from mid-thigh to mid-calf, making left-right comparisons straightforward. This posterior perspective matters because popliteal nodes are the first deep nodal basin for lymph from the lateral foot, posterolateral calf, and parts of the knee joint capsule, and they sit close enough to the popliteal vein and tibial nerve that pathology can become clinically palpable or symptomatic.
