Description
Positioned on the anterior thoracic wall, the pectoralis minor lies deep to pectoralis major and runs superolaterally from the anterior surfaces of ribs 3 to 5 toward the scapula. Its tendon inserts on the medial border and superior surface of the coracoid process, just inferior and anterior to the acromion, placing it immediately anterior to the brachial plexus cords and the axillary artery in the axilla. In a lateral, semi-transparent male torso, you would expect the highlighted pectoral mass of pectoralis major to sit superficially, with pectoralis minor visible as the smaller, triangular slip deep to it near the anterior axillary fold. Clear landmarks. Clinically, this relationship to the coracoid process and axillary neurovascular bundle is why the pectoralis minor matters beyond basic surface anatomy. Tightness or hypertrophy can contribute to pectoralis minor syndrome, a form of thoracic outlet compression where the cords of the brachial plexus and axillary vessels are constricted beneath the muscle near the coracoid, producing paresthesia or vascular symptoms that can mimic distal entrapments. Surgeons also use the coracoid and the overlying pectoralis minor as orientation points during anterior approaches to the shoulder and axilla, and during axillary lymph node dissection where the muscle defines the transition toward deeper Level II and III nodal basins. Faculty can drop this into gross anatomy lectures on the pectoral region and axilla, physical therapy modules on scapular protraction and anterior tilt mechanics, or surgical teaching files that map safe dissection planes around the coracoid process.
