Pectoralis Minor, Gross Anatomy

Description

Running deep to pectoralis major, pectoralis minor is shown as a thin triangular muscle arising from the anterior surfaces of ribs 3 to 5 near their costochondral junctions and coursing superolaterally toward the scapula. Its short tendon inserts on the medial border and superior surface of the coracoid process, placing it anterior to the thoracic wall and inferior to the clavicle as it approaches the shoulder girdle. From this lateral upper torso perspective, the deltoid caps the lateral shoulder while sternocleidomastoid and trapezius frame the anterolateral neck. Clear separation between muscular belly and tendinous ends is emphasized. Coracoid anatomy matters. Pectoralis minor acts as a dynamic stabilizer and anterior tilting force on the scapula, and its relationship to the coracoid places it immediately adjacent to the axillary vessels and brachial plexus cords that traverse the region deep to pectoralis major within the clavipectoral fascia. Tightness or hypertrophy can contribute to scapular dyskinesis and symptoms attributed to pectoralis minor syndrome, a mechanism sometimes grouped under thoracic outlet presentations when neurovascular structures are compressed during overhead activity. The rib origins also make it a practical landmark when teaching respiratory coupling between the anterior chest wall and shoulder girdle motion. Ideal for gross anatomy and kinesiology teaching when you need to contrast pectoralis major’s broad fan with the smaller pectoralis minor and to orient learners to the coracoid process before discussing axillary dissection or infraclavicular approaches.
