Description
Centered on the cervical spinal cord within a semi-transparent male vertebral column, the posterior spinal vein tracks longitudinally along the dorsal surface of the cord, receiving fine venous tributaries and venules that converge into a larger collecting trunk. Segmental branches approach from a posterolateral direction, consistent with radicular drainage entering near the dorsal root entry zones. Posterior elements of the cervical vertebrae are readable through the transparency, including the laminae and spinous processes, which sit posterior to the spinal canal and frame the cord in situ. Relationships are kept anatomical: vertebral bodies lie anterior, while the venous channel remains posterior and close to the pial surface. Attention to the posterior spinal venous pathway matters when teaching the valveless vertebral venous system and its connections to epidural and paravertebral plexuses, a route implicated in hematogenous spread of infection and metastasis. Cervical venous congestion also has practical relevance during posterior approaches to the spinal canal, where epidural venous bleeding can obscure the field and where pial veins can be vulnerable during intradural work.
