Serratus Anterior

Description

Running along the lateral thoracic wall, the serratus anterior arises as digitations from the external surfaces of the upper ribs and courses posteriorly to insert on the costal (anterior) surface of the scapula, with its fibers fanning toward the medial border and inferior angle. Superficial pectoralis major occupies the anterior chest, while the rib cage and thoracic vertebrae frame the deeper intercostal spaces between adjacent ribs. Superiorly, the clavicle, scapula, and proximal humerus outline the shoulder girdle, and the costovertebral articulations mark each rib’s posterior attachment to the vertebral column.
