Description
Running obliquely across the posterolateral neck, the splenius cervicis is isolated as a distinct strap of muscle deep to splenius capitis and superficial to the deeper intrinsic back muscles, with fibers coursing superolaterally from the upper thoracic spinous processes toward the transverse processes of the upper cervical vertebrae. Superiorly, the skull base frames the craniovertebral junction, while inferiorly the muscle’s origin aligns with the upper thoracic vertebrae and adjacent rib cage. Anterolaterally, the scapula anchors the shoulder girdle landmarks, helping orient the cervical spine in relation to the upper back.
