Description
Presented within a standing adult male figure with partial transparency of the anterior abdominal wall, the distal esophagus descends through the diaphragm to meet the gastric cardia, then expands into the stomach with its fundus positioned superiorly and to the left and the pyloric antrum coursing inferiorly and to the right. The lesser curvature lies medially, while the greater curvature arcs laterally, framing the body of the stomach before narrowing at the pylorus. Distal to the pyloric canal, the proximal duodenum begins immediately, with coiled small intestine occupying the central abdomen and the large intestine forming a peripheral frame. Portions of the urinary system sit inferiorly in the pelvis, posterior to the lower abdominal viscera. Emphasis on the pylorus and its controlled aperture into the first part of the small intestine is not academic trivia, it maps directly onto the gastric outlet. Pyloric narrowing from peptic ulcer scarring or malignancy produces delayed gastric emptying, classically with postprandial vomiting and a distended stomach on imaging, and this overlay makes the transition from antrum to duodenum easy to orient in an upright body.
