Description
Transparent rendering of the male cervical vertebrae frames the cervical spinal cord within the vertebral canal, with the pial venous plexus draped directly on the cord surface beneath the pia mater. Fine radial medullary veins emerge from the spinal cord parenchyma and converge centrifugally into longitudinal pial veins that run superior to inferior along the anterior and posterolateral aspects of the cord. Laterally, paired cervical spinal nerves course toward the intervertebral foramina, placing the venous network in close proximity to the nerve root entry and exit zones and the pial arterial supply. Venous anatomy at the pial surface matters when you are explaining intramedullary edema and hemorrhage patterns or planning exposure for intradural procedures in the cervical region. During posterior cervical laminectomy and durotomy, prominent pial veins and their radicular connections can become the main source of obscuring bleeding, and they often define safe corridors for a midline myelotomy. Spinal dural arteriovenous fistula and perimedullary AVM discussions also benefit from this view because venous congestion tracks along these longitudinal pial channels long before cord signal change appears on MRI.
