Description
Semi-transparent vertebrae in lateral view frame the spinal cord (medulla spinalis) as it descends within the vertebral canal, centered posterior to the vertebral bodies and anterior to the laminae and spinous processes. Paired spinal nerves exit segmentally from the cord as dorsal and ventral roots that converge near the intervertebral foramina, then course laterally as mixed nerves. Blue nerve highlighting makes the regular spacing of cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral levels easy to follow, with the cord’s longitudinal orientation emphasized from superior to inferior. Segmental anatomy matters here because most neurologic localization starts with matching a dermatomal or myotomal deficit to a specific spinal nerve root level, then correlating that level to vertebral landmarks that do not perfectly align with cord segments. A lateral perspective also supports discussions of common compressive patterns, such as cervical spondylotic myelopathy affecting the cord itself versus lumbar disc herniation more often impinging traversing nerve roots within the cauda equina region.
