Description
Centered within the cervical vertebral canal, the spinal cord (medulla spinalis) forms a continuous, gently tapering column posterior to the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs of C1 through C7. Superiorly it approaches the cervicomedullary junction near the foramen magnum, and inferiorly it continues toward the thoracic segment as the canal narrows relative to the cord’s diameter. Paired cervical spinal nerves are implied as short lateral exits through the intervertebral foramina, with the cord positioned posterior to the discs and anterior to the spinous processes and laminae. The normal cervical lordosis frames the cord’s course in profile. A transparent, X-ray style rendering like this is a practical teaching view for correlating bony landmarks with central nervous system anatomy, since it keeps attention on the relationship between the vertebral canal and the neural tissue it protects. It also maps cleanly onto common clinical patterns: central canal compromise from cervical spondylosis or a posterior disc-osteophyte complex tends to compress the cord anteriorly, while ligamentum flavum infolding or posterior element hypertrophy can crowd it from behind. Small changes in canal caliber matter here. This perspective supports discussions of cervical myelopathy, radiculopathy at the foramina, and the logic behind anterior cervical discectomy and fusion versus posterior decompression approaches.
