Description
Centered on the female anterior torso, the abdominal wall is layered to relate the transversus abdominis to overlying rectus abdominis and external oblique, with the broad aponeurosis highlighted as it sweeps medially toward the linea alba. Superiorly, the costal margin and adjacent intercostal musculature frame the upper abdominal attachments, while the inferior fibers course toward the iliac crest and inguinal region. Laterally, the muscular bellies transition into tendinous sheets, and superior-lateral context includes deltoid with proximal biceps brachii and brachialis at the upper limb. Clean fascial planes are the point. Transversus abdominis matters because it is the deepest anterolateral abdominal muscle and the layer that surgeons and anesthetists often target when working in the transversus plane between internal oblique and transversus abdominis.
