Description
Prominent in the anterior abdominal wall, the transversus abdominis is emphasized by its horizontally oriented fibers running from the thoracolumbar fascia, iliac crest, and inguinal ligament toward the linea alba and pubic crest via the rectus sheath. Superficial muscles such as pectoralis major, rectus abdominis, and serratus anterior frame the torso, while the transversus abdominis sits deep to the external and internal oblique layers, tightening the abdominal “corset” from lateral to medial. A slight body turn allows you to read the fiber direction across the anterolateral abdomen and relate it to nearby landmarks including the costal margin superiorly and the anterior superior iliac spine inferiorly.
