Description
Spanning the dorsum of the male foot, the dorsal venous arch (arcus venosus dorsalis pedis) courses transversely across the distal metatarsals, just proximal to the metatarsophalangeal joints, with tributaries rising from the dorsal digital veins of the toes. Medially and laterally, the arch continues into the marginal veins, which track along the borders of the foot superficial to the metatarsals and tarsal bones and then sweep proximally toward the ankle region. Beneath the superficial venous network, the phalanges, metatarsals, and tarsal bones are rendered with clear joint contours, letting you read vessel position against bony landmarks. Superficial veins dominate. Placing the dorsal venous arch against the osseous framework matters when you need reliable landmarks for dorsal foot venepuncture and when teaching why superficial veins can vary with edema, dehydration, or vasoconstriction. The arch also helps orient venous return pathways into the great saphenous vein medially and the small saphenous vein laterally, an arrangement clinicians reference when tracing superficial thrombophlebitis or mapping veins preoperatively for bypass conduit assessment. Dorsal veins are also vulnerable to laceration in dorsal foot trauma and during dorsal approaches for forefoot procedures, where incisions risk crossing the venous arcade.
