Across the dorsum of the male foot, the dorsal venous arch spans transversely at the level of the metatarsal bases, receiving dorsal metatarsal veins and draining medially toward the great saphenous vein and laterally toward the small saphenous vein. From this superficial network, tributaries track proximally over the anterior ankle and along the anteromedial and posterolateral margins of the distal leg, running in parallel with the major arterial pathways of the foot. Perforating veins are implied where the dorsal system communicates with the plantar venous plexus and deeper venae comitantes. Small vessels matter here. Clinically, the dorsal venous arch is a common access site for peripheral IV cannulation, yet it sits close to the dorsalis pedis artery and the deep fibular (peroneal) nerve in the anterior tarsal region, so an accurate appreciation of surface venous anatomy reduces avoidable arterial puncture or neuropathic pain. The medial limb of the arch feeding the great saphenous vein also underpins patterns of superficial venous reflux and guides mapping before endovenous ablation or surgical ligation. Dorsal foot edema and superficial thrombophlebitis often track along these same channels, so the venous pathways shown here translate directly to bedside inspection and compression ultrasonography planning.
